Outdoor First Aid Courses – FAQs

1. Do these courses meet the requirements for Scouts?

Our Outdoor First Aid courses do cover the requirements for Scouts. When you join us for your first aid training, please tell us on the day, that you need the course for your UK Scouting qualifications, and we will make sure that we include training on Meningitis, Sepsis, Dental emergencies and Paediatric CPR.

2. What is covered in your standard outdoor first aid courses?

We cover these topics as standard
Vital Signs – making informed decisions on the information you have
Primary and secondary surveys – prioritising first aid, with a level head
Airway management & managing the unconscious casualty
Casualty monitoring in the outdoors
CPR with the use of AEDs (defibrillators)
Drowning
Bleeding and catastrophic bleed management
Fracture management / immobilising limbs & the use of improvised splints
Chest injuries, head injuries
Environmental factors – hypothermia, hyperthermia, bites
Casualty evacuation
Common conditions – asthma, diabetes, seizures, strokes

3. What time do your courses start and finish?

We are mandated to allow 16 hours for the delivery of the training. To that end, our courses commence at 9am and will be completed by 6pm, allowing for an hour of breaks during the day. Often, we’re done before 6pm, but you should be prepared for the training to last until that time.

4. Where do your courses take place?

We run regular Outdoor First Aid courses in Sheffield, Youlegreave in the Peak District (near Bakewell) and in Camberley. You will see by each course listing a two-letter code denoting the location, as follows:

WVH – Wadshelf Village Hall, Wadshelf, S42 7BX near Chesterfield/Sheffield (Peak District venue)
AW – Awesome Walls, Sheffield, S4 7QX
YG – Youlgreave, Peak District, DE45 1WN (Peak District venue)
CY – Camberley, Surrey, GU15 2DA

Occasionally other venues will become available and we’ll list the address beside its course listing. Each location is hyper-linked to the exact location on Google Maps. The venue addresses are given in the joining instructions that you will receive when you book.

5. Are your venues easy to access without a car?

Yes! This forms a large part of sourcing our venues.

WVH – Wadshelf Village Hall, Wadshelf, S42 7BX near Chesterfield/Sheffield take the train to Chesterfield and then the 170/X17 bus (25 min ride)
AW – Awesome Walls, Sheffield, S4 7QX take the train to Sheffield and then a taxi or walk/cycle the 2 mile journey
YG – Youlgreave, Peak District, DE45 1WN (Peak District venue) – email us if you need to share a ride and we’ll see what we can arrange
CY – Camberley, Surrey, GU15 2DA take the train to Camberley and then a taxi or walk/cycle the 1 mile journey

6. Will your 2 day Outdoor First Aid courses revalidate my Lowland Leader Award?

Yes! Almost certainly the person leading your course will have their own set of NGB awards (pretty much, we all work in the outdoor industry) and so we know what you need. Our courses are applicable for all NGB Award holders including Mountain Training, British Cycling/MIAS, Caving, Water and for BASI leaders.

7. Does the 2 day Outdoor First Aid course prepare me for adventurous travel overseas on expedition and far from help?

Our 2 day Outdoor First Aid course will be great training for you, but far better would be to join one of our three day Advanced Outdoor First Aid courses. These are particularly popular with leaders who work with World Challenge Expeditions and Camps International, who lead sixth form expeditions to remote locations, for extended periods of time. We also train a fair few university academics each year on these courses who lead field-trips overseas.

Myself and a few colleagues recently did the outdoor first aid training at Awesome Walls with Will, Andy and Stu and I’d highly recommend it. The training was enjoyable as well as super informative with a great balance of discussion and practical scenarios to work through. Will and co clearly have heaps of experience and offer a very pragmatic approach to first aid in the outdoors as well as more urban environments.
